DI box issue/questions
« on: October 23, 2007, 08:34:28 PM »

Hello - I'm new to all of this. I'll be setting up a board for my church. We will be using long (100') xlr cables, no snake.

My DI box, for the keyboard, doesn't work. I want to make sure I am doing everything right before I exchange it.

Equipment in question
 Casio Privia keyboard px-310
   Line Out (R)(L/Mono)    Standard Jacks x 2
   Output Impedance: 2.3k Ω
   Output Voltage: 1.0V (RMS) MAX
 Whirlwind  EDB1 direct box
   1/4" In and Through jacks
   XLR output
Pad switch for connection to "hot" signal sources
Ground Lift switch to help isolate hum and buzz
 Peavey S-14 Mixer

EDB1 >> any xlr cable >> any input = no hum

Casio >> any 1/4" patch cable I have >> EDB1 >> any xlr cable >> any input = HUM and no keyboard sound

When I "pad" down the DI box the hum goes down, no keyboard through mixer, bringing up the gain only brings back the hum and still no keyboards. ground lift makes no difference.

Does this sound like a bad DI box? I get mics, guitar through the mixer just fine. keyboard with 1/4" phono to a unbalanced input works just fine. Only when using the DI box I cant get any keyboards and only loud hum. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance!!!

Just for grins I plugged the keyboard into the OUT jack on the DI box and everything works as expected. VERY weird!

The IN and OUT are usually just tied together.  Sounds like the you may have a broken ground on the IN connector.  See if you can open up the box.  It may be an easy fix.

Exchange the DI box and save the next guy the hassle, I would look for a DI box that has a ground lift and adjustable pad switch as well, possibly a Active DI but then youll need phantom power to power the DI, Passive should work fine, since the Keyboard should have sufficient level to drive the line without a problem.

Um, re-read his post ... he said the EWI box has both a pad and a ground lift.

Thanks all - I have asked my local supplier, whom I got the DI box from, to ready an exchange and to test the box before I pick it up. If I get another bum box I will be really pressed for time getting everything set up for our first production run. Maybe I'll pick up an extra DI box as a spare.

I do have phantom power from the board (Peavey S14) but my understanding is that a passive DI will be justfine for this application. It does have gnd lif and pad.

Thanks for all the replies!

Actually he said he has a Whirlwind EDB1, not an EWI.  But you're correct about the ground lift and pad.

It's always a good idea to have a spare DI box.

You wont need Phantom with Passive DI's, thats what I get for not getting my glasses, LOL, Ive got a bunch of CBI Blue passive DI boxes there inexpensive and do a great job and there very rugged, and yes it never hurts to have spares, not having a spare for a critical piece is asking for Mr Murphy to make an appearance just when that piece of music is needed most.
