That may also depend upon the shape of the room and seating.  Sightlines are a definite consideration.  In a wider fan or sideways rectangle contemporary layout (and many cruciform plans) a curved or shaped front often better fits the layout, but in a traditional shoebox shape a square stage may work better.

The stage shape as well as access points may also depend on what you have on stage and how you organize it.  Aspects such as accommodating the choir, whether you need wing space with ready stage access, whether you have to get large groups of people on and off stage easily, whether your worship leasers like to move from the stage into the congregation, whether you also need to use the room for weddings and other special events, and so on.
