Zoom H4
« on: March 17, 2007, 01:04:33 PM »

I am interested in a flash drive recorder, and the Zoom H4 is a contender.

The H4 has both an internal pair of stereo mics and pair of combination XLR-1/4" phone input jacks. The unit is advertised as having "multi-track" capability, but what is not clear to me is whether I can record 4 channels simultaneously through the two mic and stereo inputs, or does their definition of multitrack mean to lay down a track, lay another track, and so on. The web site is not clear on this point.

Has anyone on this forum actually worked with this device and verified this capability?

i belive, but am not entirely sure,  that the four tracks are two external via the XLR and the two stereo tracks from the built in microphones, if you combine them you get four tracks.

The manual is available here - http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/manual/english.php under H4.

It looks like it can only record two inputs at a time, so it would be lay down two tracks, then lay down two more.

Here is a link to a decent comparison chart for some of the portable digital recorders - http://www.bswusa.com/assets/pdf/RecorderComparisons.pdf

The Marantz rack mount units are very nice if you are looking for a rackmount compact flash recorder.
