I'm looking for a lamp that will provide just enough light (blue?) to read our notes at the sound/light control console.  We are a fast-growing Wesleyan church in the finger lakes region of New york.  I am serving as the tech director (volunteer) for our Children's ministries.  We run a modified "Kidstuff" program from North Point in Atlanta, under the name "PowerHouse".  We've just completely renovated our PowerHouse room, including new lighting and control console.  Now, I'm finding my night vision is not what it once was, so I need a lamp to light the way, as I try to keep up with the lighting and sound cues in a fast-paced environment.  Any suggestions on lighting?

Do you want it AC powered or can it be battery operated?

Since you've got new consoles I guess/hope they have connectors to something like this: http://www.littlite.com

Cheap lamp? Most of us (assuming there are no actual desk lamps) would bring in and old lamp and just gel it up. Use a medium-dark blue and as an added bonus you will find that anything highlit with a bright highlighter (yellow, grren, pink - not blue) will come up really bright!!! Useful for scripts and so on.

Astronomers use red. Apparently it has almost no effect on night vision.

I believe that aircraft use green.  I read an article as to why green was better in some circumstances.  Perhaps a google search will find it?

I guess green would proabably be the best compromise between nightvision and visibility. Very low intensity red is used in darkrooms. However as i metnioned, do not overlook the benefits of white being highlit under dark blue light - most desk tape is white with black on it and highlight of th white makes the black extremly visible.

This is caused by the ultraviolet parts of dark blue light. So the advantage as a tech for using blue is that 1. dark blue at a reasonably low intenisty does not affect night vision too much and 2. allows black on white to beextremely visible.

Quite a good compromise for our particular sitution don't you think?

This article explains how the eye reacts to various colors, so I guess it will be up to the user what he really needs to accomplish and the balance between seeing what he is doing under illumination and preserving his night vision for everything else.

Markertek has some interesting small and rackmount offerings in LED utility lights, too. (Search on "LED light")

Yes, as detailed above, Littlite is the way to go. Your consoles should have a provision for them (usually 5-pin). Otherwise just a portable desk lamp with gel. If you're on a very low budget, maybe even some of the Chinese gooseneck lights will do the trick.
