Hi folks-
We have a medium sized worship band, consisting of acoustic guitar (occasionally electric)  acoustic drums (submixed to 2 channels-kick, overheads), bass, keys, alternating sax and mandolin or second acoustic gtr.

We have 4 channels of DBX compressors and I wanted some input to if we are using them correctly.

Current channels being compressed: lead acoustic, lead vocal, bass and drum kick.

The standard dbx settings, with minor tweaking, are being used.

How are we doing?? Would you do differently?

The channels that you are using compression on aren't bad choices, although I wouldn't compress the acoustic guitar at my church, that depends largely on playing style.  There is little point in using a compressor with the factory settings.  DBX put together a decent whitepaper about basic compressor use, it tells you the basics:

What does your entire input list look like?

If I had 4ch of comps....  I'd get the lead vox, BG vox--maybe on a sub group if you have a Prase team, Bass, preacher's lav.  I may swap bass for kick depending on the bass player's rig--if he's already squashing it...then there's no need for me to do it, too.

BTW what are we talking about here a 1046, or a pair of 166s, 266s, or 1066s?

Hi guys-
Thanks so far-

We have 2 266's and are using them separately, not linked.

What I meant by the factory setting sis that we are following the directions on the whitepaper, with a few tweaks for our own room.

I lead from the acoustic guitar, and to get it to sit well in the mix, the compression does help even it out.

I hadn't thought of the BGV's needing compression, although they are excellent singers with good control, I may try that!!

Our usual input list:
Lead vox
2 BGV's (or 3 sometimes)
Lead acoustic gtr
bass- compressed out of the amp-direct line
keyboard-stereo
mandolin/sax (alternating weeks)
kick
drum submix


any more ideas would be great!
