Ubiquiti AP Antenna Radiation Patterns
« on: July 31, 2024, 11:41:38 AM »

So we needed to move one of our permanently mounted outdoor APs to better cover a temporary stage we’re bringing in for an event this weekend. All I knew was that it was one of the Ubiquiti “flying saucer” (ceiling mount) units installed by our IT contractor several years ago.  Turns out it is a UAP-AC-HD. Out of curiosity I went looking for details about the unit on the Ubiquiti site — specifically what the expected radiation pattern was — and I found this resource:

   https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005212927-AP-Antenna-Radiation-Patterns

I thought it a rather interesting resource and worth sharing here given the topic seems to come up again and again.

The limiting factor of that information is all you see is a single plane of signal pattern.  The radiation is technically in a sphere around the device, and you're rarely going to be on the exact plane.

Additionally, transmit and receive behavior may be somewhat different.  Lastly, the combination on how the transmit and receive pattern of the device you are connecting to will make a huge difference as well.

What is quite interesting is how much stronger the signal strength is with the saucer access points vs anything with external antennas.  I honestly would have expected the opposite.

True, but note that the “Model Summary Plots” section below all of the colorful plots does offer a bit more information for each device — quote:
“This section includes a graphic summary for each UniFi Access point shown in the table above, portraying radiation plots for Azimuth, Elevation 0°, Elevation 90° and Mapped 3D.”
