4 kw181 placement cluster
(1/1)
Mark Rossiter:
I have 4 kw181 subs. I have always stacked them left and right. Great sound but never really happy with the bass "alley" and pockets that it creates. We are going to switch around our setup, and the absolute best cluster everyone agrees on is having two kw181 next to each other center stage and the other stacked on top like a cube. Everyone has said it is great. My question is, what about a stage that is not high enough for that. Should I place all 4 kw181 side by side along the front of the stage? Or two side by side with a gap between the others side by side.. say 3, 4, 5 feet according to different wavelengths? I've read so many different opinions about it. I'm not looking for a one size fits all, just a general rule of thumb. Say for instance if your outside or in a very very large room? I have seen polarity changes and cardioid setups that look pretty cool, but I do not have any processing to create the delay that a lot of setups call for. The only thing is the polarity switch on the back of the kw181s. TIA for any advice and/or help.

I ran 4 KW-181 for years. Center clustered, tight packed if possible.
Stacked 2 high L&R as you have done in the past when center clustered was not possible. In that event, I tried dropping one side maybe 3 db. That didn't solve power alley so back up they came.
I also stacked 3 off to the side in one venue. That actually worked really well. Looked odd but hey...
Finally in a block of 4 with mains splayed L&R for a venue with a really weird stage setup.
Ultimately you do what you can given the limits of the venue.
