Haven't read your article yet, but is it like buying a boat?  At first, it's the happiest day of your life... only to be bettered by your happiness the day you sell the boat.

Well, there is an appearance by an actual destroyer towards the end of the piece...

Where's Keith Broughton! The company we were both working with regularly circa 2007 had these obscure first generation Allen and Heath MixWizard 12:2 consoles for smaller shows and the really great thing about them was that even with the faders down there would still be a very loud BLAM when a condenser mic or active DI was connected or disconnected. I seem to remember that there was a work around, probably turn phantom off before making/breaking connections which IS best practice but it's not always top of mind at the end of the show when walk out music is playing and you think it's a good time to strike the mic at the lectern...

I was an authorized A&H service tech back then and I can tell you that those desks had a lot of problems with bleed-through on the faders (and sometimes the headphones...definitely an issue on the GL2200). That issue was related to the fader not really being at 0v potential when it was all the way down. It's been a minute, but I think this was related to resistance build up on the three-pin tin headers that the faders connected to the board with...or it could have been within the faders themselves. Fun fact: The spell check here on the forum did not recognize the word "faders"...I just added it to the dictionary ::). You would think it might've come up here one or two... thousand times since the forum launched! :o

The spell check is in your browser, most likely.  I had to add it to the dictionary for Firefox.

When I first got into doing real tuning of loudspeaker systems (after being in the rental business some 25 years of more), I would typically do my tuning, and then set the limiters as the last step.

However, when I started tuning large stadium systems, I changed my process.

There is A LOT of power, and gain, and all sorts of things can accidentally happen and possibly cause LOTS of damage to components.

Now, the FIRST thing I do is to set proper limiters.  THEN, I proceed to put signal into the system and do the alignment/tuning.

Of course I do this on every system I tune now-just in case I do something stupid, or something weird happens.  I have several things in place to keep a handle on things to help prevent them from being damaged.

I had a very similar experience this week where a construction crew started work the exact moment that I started wiring things up on an install job, and they started with a very loud banging sound right as I connected the first box to the amplifier I was very sure I had muted in the system processing.

After a minor heart attack and the realization that I had not, in fact, blown up several thousand dollars worth of brand new PA, everything was fine, but definitely one of those "oh shit" moments.
