As I'd previously heard about the rally incident, my second thought was "well, if he wasn't in the PA, he'd make a scene about not paying the bill."

Hydraulic failure may be rare, but it’s certainly one of those things that scares me about using hoists as overhead loads. Had to use one a few years back to hang a screen. Problem was, with the engine off, it ended up sagging about a foot overnight. The truck owner didn’t believe us when we told them it was happening.

People shooting in the direction of your boom lift is rare I'll grant that. Your local industrial equipment rental house doing a poor job of maintaining and inspecting their equipment isn't that kind of rare. Don't hang your arrays from shooting boom lifts.

One fast way to "lower the boom"..

I'm always amazed when I see POCO digger derricks used as temporary supports for poles carrying primaries like I saw this weekend-obviously left over a full weekend.  Seems like a lot of faith in hydraulics to leave it unattended.

Back in the mid 1980s used four shiny brand new telescopic lifts to fly the PA at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand.

They each were supporting around 3000 pounds, well under their vertical lift capacity, but would drop more than a foot during a show. If the show went more than a few hours, we'd have to start up the diesels to run the telescopic booms back up to trim height. The puff of smoke when they were started could be annoying depending on wind direction..

Never would have considered leaving them up overnight.

Though the load was well under the lifts vertical weight limit, an inexperienced operator found 3000 pounds was more than enough to make the fork truck's rear wheels lift off the ground when the boom was raised while the telescopic portion was partially extended. He lowered the boom before the truck tipped over forward.
If he'd made that mistake on the way down instead of up, a lot of speaker magnets would have been broken off the frames  :'(

Had the boom lift hydraulic line rather than the telescope line been shot off, the stage left Trump PA array may have ended up on the John Deere tractor..
