History test
« on: July 13, 2024, 09:28:34 AM »

By noontime the dock is swarming with men
Comin' out from the ghostly freighter
They move in the shadows where no one can see
And they're chainin' up people
And they're bringin' em to me
Askin' me, "Kill them now or later?"
Askin' me, "Kill them now or later?"

Nope, but Bobby Darin covered another song from the same show.

Pirate Jenny?
a/k/a The Black Freighter.

"Jenny, we've been talking about our families. You never told us about your family?

"Family? I never had a family.  All I ever had... was a dream."

My first exposure to Three Penny Opera was this song as performed by Steel Eye Span, which led to a rabbit-hole experience with both the song and Brecht/Weill.

Multiple productions with Lotte Lenya were filmed and it's interesting to see/hear the different translations of the original German lyrics; Ute Lemper's performances are stunning, too.  Nina Simone has stark cover that I'm not sure I've reached the depths of after years of listening.  Judy Collins covering it surprised me in that I didn't recall hearing her sing it before.  I still like Steel Eye Span version with Maddy Prior.

I think we have discussed Steel Eye Span (with Maddy Prior)

She looked out of the window as white as any milk
And he looked out of the window as black as any silk

You never shall have my maidenhead
That I have kept so long

I'd rather die a maid
Ah, but then she said and be buried all in my grave
Thank to have such a nasty, husky, dusky, dusky, musky (had to look this part up)
coal black smith, a maiden I will die!

From two magicians

Produced by non-other than Ian Anderson.  Some great stuff if you have never heard it.  I love the mooncoin jig.

My first exposure was with Lotte Lenya in the ‘50s, maybe even on 78s. When your name is “Mac” you get introduced to The Three Penny Opera early.
