Freespeak Bluetooth Bone-Conduction headset
« on: July 11, 2024, 04:19:51 PM »

Experimenting with a Shokz bone-conduction bluetooth headset and the FSII beltpack. Works great for listening, but when I speak, I hear myself a second later via bluetooth, even with sidetone disabled. It's of course because of the latency of bluetooth, but is there any solution to eliminate the echo? Don't mind if sidetone doesn't work in this scenario.

Also, what is out there for bone-conduction WIRED headsets that would work well with FSII?

I guess nobody's tried a BT headset with FSII yet?

Yes, that's the one I was trying, but I was getting echo even with sidetone disabled. Just wondering if anyone else experienced that or had a solution or suggestion?

I'd also like to know if anyone has a recommendation of a wired bone conduction headset for comms.

Don't select any of the 2 pin adapter options. The mics are generally electret so a resistor might be needed to drop the pack mic voltage a bit: 2-way radio bias voltage is typically 1.5V. Best to inquire with the OEMs.

Hmm…I seem to recall that I disabled sidetone in the Role using the CCM so it wouldn’t reset after a pack reboot. I may have also turned sidetone all the way down prior to disabling it, but that shouldn’t make a difference.

I used my OpenComm headset for a solid 5 days of show with zero issues and SOOOO much more comfort.

I have another FS-II show Wed-Sat this week that I can check settings on and try to report back.

TY, curious what might be different in your settings.

Just curious if you know if this one actually works? I purchased it sight-unseen after some back-and-forth with the manufacturer, who sadly was only offering support for known walkie-talkies and CBs. They had no 4-pin XLR adapters or experience in that environment, so I took a chance and ordered it.
Got it wired up and the volume is way too low the audio is super-thin. Seems like it needs a battery-powered driver or something to give it enough oomph to actually work. I know that some other ones need a battery to make them work, even though they're wired.
I've got an e-mail into the manufacturer, but curious if anyone's been able to make one of these actually work.

The mics for LMR portables generally need about 1.5V, but because these mics also tend to have a nominal impedance roughly that of a dynamic mic in our intercom world, the belt pack's auto-sensing circuit may think it's a dynamic and shut off the bias. Try going into the belt pack settings and setting the mic type as electret/condenser. This has worked for us in the past using surveillance kits. You may have to run a hotter mic gain.
