Venue Volume & EQ control
« on: June 30, 2024, 10:16:34 AM »

Hi guys

I wonder if anyone can help me. We are a venue with planning restrictions / noise limiter. I’m on the third noise limiter in as many years. It’s a cut out device but they it keeps not working properly.

It would be much easier to have ‘remote’ volume and EQ control. This would allow us to reduce the low frequency which is the noise that carries. The volume in the venue could be load as long as the low frequency isn’t, but if still too loud, I’d like to be able to turn it down.

I’m looking for something which can sit in between the mixing desk and speakers with XLR in/out but small enough to be inconspicuous. Really need it to have wifi control.

Does anyone know of any devices that might be available and do the job?

Thanks

Byron,

You are looking for a technical solution to a human interface problem.
That "remote" approach won't work, though it could be implemented via WiFi control of a digital mixer.

Cheers,

A behringer XR12 is nice and small. You can control it with the built in wifi, or connect it to a better wifi network if you need more range than the built in antenna.

Just put this in the path between the mixer and the speakers.

Just beware that making adjustments here and NOT telling whoever is operating the main board will likely result in them trying to fix what you mess up, potentially making things worse.

Sneaky adjustments without communications rarely work out.

Depending on the venues type of system the system DSP could have the low frequency / sub outputs set to limit at the point the low frequency levels become a problem.

That said as Brian noted the operator most likely would start trying to compensate.

Is this for live music or a DJ system?

A severe beating of the person responsible for jeopardizing the venue's occupancy/liquor/public assembly licenses should be used, or the contract for the performer's "performance" should include monetary forfeiture clauses if limits are breached.  The only thing people understand are physical or financial pain.

I'm aware of more than one international act that played for free after multiple SPL violations in amphitheaters and venue imposed the fines on the promoter, who withheld settlement from the acts.
