DLC as Feedeer Cable?

(1/2) > >>

Frank Czar:
Hi Guys,

I have and only seen EISL or SC cable being used on jobs but I recently ran across DLC cable being used as feeder from the genny to the distro. Is this cable legal for this use as a feeder cable?

I have and only seen EISL or SC cable being used on jobs but I recently ran across DLO cable being used as feeder from the genny to the distro. Is this cable legal for this use as a feeder cable?

Per a southwire publication on DLO:

“When DLO cables are used as conductors for general wiring practices, in accordance with the NEC® Article 310 based on their RHH/RHW-2 listing, the cables are subject to the same requirements as any other RHH/RHW rated conductors.”

I don’t have my NEC handy but that should tell you where to look.  My first question would be if it’s approved for unprotected (outside of an approved wire way) use.

Chris Hindle:
From Google:
Diesel locomotive cable (DLO) is a flexible cable with a dual-extruded product consisting of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) insulation and a thermoset chlorinated polyethylene rubber (TS-CPE) jacket. DLO comes with tinned copper Class I stranded conductors. The voltage rating for DLO cable is 2000 volts.

DLO cable is recommended as a portable cable for drilling rigs, on-shore and off- shore applications, railroad and transit car wiring, and electric earth-moving equipment. It also extremely well-suited for other applications like shipyards, power and control jumper cables, motor leads, and sometimes as a telecom power supply.

Sounds good for very flexible feeder, but the local inspector may not have a clue. He/she is the one you have to impress.

Tim McCulloch:
Allowed feeder types are covered under Articles 520 and 525.

As for the unsafe aluminum wire that is generally single strand conductor cables like 14/2, 12/2 and etc. This multi strand cable is safe and still used very commonly.
