Wavetool?
« on: June 18, 2024, 04:39:22 PM »

Just learned yesterday that this existed, from a Mixonline article about the Alicia Keys Broadway musical.

Looking at Wavetools website (now owned by Shure), the price seems real reasonable (is that a forever license or annual or what?) for 16 channels (do I get to pick which 16 channels I want to use today, and a different group next time?), the specific details seem unclear.

There is no hardware interface listed, so this grabs onto the RJ45 network accessed by each receiver? Is it Dante-only? I'm sketchy on Dante knowledge. A guy set up a two-node network for a demo but I haven't used it since.

In the Mixonline article it talks about being able to listen in the dressing room with the talent to the mic they're wearing, but that obviously means you've set up your wi-fi network to cover the dressing room(s) as well as the stage and house, right?

If I have one ipad connected at FOH and another onstage/around stage, or two or more like that, that's all covered by one license?

There were only 3 threads here that came up that mentioned Wavetools in passing, so a number of you use it? Do you still like it?

It seems pretty miraculous.

Thanks!

I can't speak to the new rules under Shure's ownership, but watch the session we did on it on Practical Show Tech. https://practicalshow.tech/show-archive/introduction-to-wavetool-by-wavemark-pst-043?rq=wavetool

Like Mac I can't speak to any of the more recent developments, but what I can say is that my experience with it across several shows as an A2 has been somewhere between "what a great tool" and "how did we manage without this thing?". We were using it with EM 3525s (not a typo, the ones with RS-485 ports) and getting the audio directly from an SD-Rack using a USB-MADI adapter. In addition to all the wireless, I'd also typically dump in a dry vocal mix (the same as the listen monitor at my work station) so that I could easily listen for problems if I was away from my station (being able to monitor inputs using an iPad over Wi-Fi was a real plus).

Timo from Wavetool / Shure here.

In terms of software development, nothing has changed since the Shure acquisition and we will be adding new features and improvements to Wavetool but also keep on supporting other brands in Wavetool as well. In fact, there will be a new public BETA very soon available at: https://wavetool.fi/beta/ so watch that space if you interested in some new cool features.

Wavetool is not tied to any specific hardware and can use any Core Audio device (48kHz/96kHz) as its I/O device. Obviously, DANTE is a very easy way to get the audio in but also MADI is often in use with Wavetool.

You'll find some setup tutorials from Shure YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWX_5cwSk9icGJwKwAcQqpVMmzifQEhVI
And quite handy User Guide from here: https://content-files.shure.com/Pubs/wavetool/index.html

The Hell's Kitchen musical is just one of many Broadway or West End shows to use Wavetool and actually most of the shows that are supplied by companies like Autograph, Stage Sound Services, Orbital, PRG, Masque Sound and Sound Associates use Wavetool as a the main audio monitoring and listening tool for A2's.
Some of the shows use a WIFI network to allow A2 to listen the audio channels wirelessly but please note that an iPad can also be hardwired to a fixed location to give an easy access to listen any channel out of possible 128 channels.

Cheers,

I did look at the entire Wavetool episode in the link that I and then Pete posted (didn't see the errant hyphen until Pete quoted my post, fixed that).

Wavetool seems pretty neat, especially for those who can use it on a daily or weekly basis and keep up on how to access all the great features. Like so many software programs, I wonder how I'd be able to remember all the tricks when using it as sporadically as I know I would. I forget how to work WWB when I don't need to use it for a year or two.

Still, it was great to see how powerful a tool it is.

Thanks!
