Show bag binoculars ?
« on: September 23, 2023, 02:45:14 PM »

I've got a small set of cheap Chinese Ebay binoculars but the focus just wheel broke off the first time it took a bump while still in my bag. Can anyone suggest some small but reliable binocs?

I have these in my carry bag as "singer finders" to see who is really moving lips.

Timely question! My pair is sitting in front of me for tonight's game. Mine are Pentax (Ricoh) AD 8 x 25WP. https://binocularscanada.com/products/productDetail.aspx?pid=62881 I can't recall if I bought them or got them on points, but they've been good. The cheap ones ALWAYS fail so I would at least buy a name brand.

Any thoughts on magnification and objective lens size? Are the compact ones bright enough in dark venues?

Also, monoculars vs. binoculars?

Tough to go wrong with Bausch & Lomb, Nikon, Bushnell or Pentax.
On one show I used a 300mm 2.8 camera lens, with an eyepiece adapter.....
Back in the early 80's I bought a set of Nikon 20x50.

I've had a pair of small Bushnell 4x30 Powerviews for +20 years that's taken a beating in all sorts of environments.... and still as functional and effective today as to when I bought them. As Chris mentioned, cant go wrong with Bushnell, B&L, Nikon, etc.

+1. I also have a small pair of Tasco binoculars that I bought for this purpose in the 1980's. Optics are still great but one of the hinges is a bit floppy now so they're a bit irritating to use. I would tell you what mag they are, but they are...locationally challenged...at the moment :-[. Will update when I see them next.

If you found the Tasco acceptable, you'll love the Vortex Optics model I linked to above.  A superior pair, so to speak.

It's only half a set, but I've got a Zeiss Miniquick that's tolerated quite a bit of abuse over the years.  Doesn't get much more compact, but not so great in low light and not a huge amount of magnification
