Shure Beta 58 replacement ball
« on: September 18, 2023, 12:09:24 PM »

Does anyone have a cheaper alternative source for this? They are slightly different from the SM-58 ball: the band is wider to accommodate the blue rubber band. I tried a few off Amazon and they all seem to have a different color band. I’m not interested in paying $45 for the Shure replacement.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, years ago I've bought a bunch of Shure 58/B58 grills from China for cheap to replace a damaged balls on my mics as needed, theses are my mics and I don't care much what musicians think about them to have exact 100% look of originals.

They have good balls at Audiopile, not to be confused with Mike Pyle.  For cheap balls check out Seismic audio, they have black and other colors.

Part of the reason the Beta 58 grills cost so much more is that they're a hardened steel.  They take a heck of a lot more abuse than the SM58 heads, and WAY more than the cheap China stuff that bends if you sing too loudly into it.

Of course, at $5 each, you can go through a bunch of China ones before you match the cost.

The harder steel in the Beta 58 screen does not deflect as easily, but that lack of impact shock absorption can result in a broken cartridge if a performer throws the mic down on a hard stage.

Two or three shows in a row..
