Yamaha DHR?
« on: September 16, 2023, 05:57:29 PM »

Hi folks, has anyone tried these lately, either the 12 or 15"? They look to be good value around the right price range for what I'm looking for.
Three piece band currently with QSC HPR 153 and 18" subs. Which are overkill most every time and heavy.  Or something from JBL maybe?

Thanks

When it comes to pro sound purchaces buying on price alone seldom gets you appropriate gear.
A budget 12+1 or 15+1 speaker is going to be a significant downgrade from a 3-way box like the 153 in sound quality.

That said if you really don't need the output of the HPR rig and fancy something lighter and easier to move then you certainly could get that with some of the modern powered speakers that are available.  But if you still want be able to produce a live band worthy full range sound with kick drum and bass through the PA then subs aren't optional, so you need to be looking at 12+1 over 15" subs or maybe a slightly smaller version of that depending on your actual needs.

The only 12" model in the DHR series is the DHR12M co-axial stage wedge. I've had great reviews from customers using them for monitors, but I don't know of anyone using them for mains. Looking at specs I see this cab has a larger diaphragm in the horn driver than the 15" model, 1.75" vs 1.4". They have the same crossover point of 1.8 KHz, typical for a 1" exit horn and probably a bit higher than ideal for the DHR15.
