Panning a stereo input signal for IEM mix
« on: August 30, 2023, 10:30:14 PM »

A band I mix recently added a second guitarist and the two guitarists want to pan themselves in their ear mixes to tell who's doing what.  Problem is, they both run stereo floor units direct in to the X32 rack.  How can they get both the L and R signals into the mixer yet collapse them to a single channel that can be panned?  I know you could do it as two separate channels and pan them both but that's pretty clumsy when trying to adjust the mix on a twitchy phone screen.

Do they need stereo to hear themselves properly?

Yes, they say their sound is different when only taking one channel.  Ditto for the stereo keys that they would also like to place somewhere in the LR sound field.

In their ears, pan 1 guitar L > L and R > C and pan the other L > C and R > R

Good suggestion, thanks.  Honestly I thought that once you linked two channels it forced you to pan them hard L and R!

That's the default on the X/M platform but you can choose which parameters link and which don't. I'd start with what I posted and then maybe pan the center ones around a bit until each guitarist hears what he hopes to.

I think hard L/R panning is the *default* for most brands and models.  The solution you offer should work with all mixers. :)
