The goal is to "automix" 16 conference table mics.  Or at least keep the levels relatively consistent and avoid feedback.

The XR18 would work except that the client had a bad experience with Behringer and that's what this new mixer is meant to replace.

Inexpensive means as cheap as possible to get the job done, but I know there are limits.  I started this message thinking that a QL1 was the most cost-effective way to get 16 channels, so I consider that the top of the budget.  Would like cheaper of course.

Assume the operators are completely inexperienced and would ideally not have to touch the mixer at all during standard meetings besides turning the ipod input up and down and possibly adjusting the overall balance of the 16 mics with the playback.

The Shure, A&H and Soundcraft all sounds like good options worth exploring.

One other option the client would like, but isn't a hard requirement, is support for a remote stage box.  This would simplify wiring.  That immediately bumps things up to another price tier.

How long would the cable run need to be?
Keep in mind mixers like the Ui24 and A&H QU Q Pac or the QU SB are a stage box form factor mixer and could be placed just about anywhere and operated remotely with an iPad.

The A&H QU's have an app called Q Control that can give the operator only the control functions they need to touch.

Wow, so an X AIR XR18 has 16 channels of automix while all of the X/M32 mixers have only 8?  That's crazy, but does give me ideas.

This sentence seems to express a misunderstanding of what an “auto mixer” does. As they exist is 2023, auto mixers in digital consoles do not keep levels constant. The operator does that, just as they would with any mixer. What they do is lower the level of those mics with little or no input at that instant to leave more available gain before feedback for the one or two mics that are active.

The OP has mentioned "avoiding feedback" and Dugan so that is likely enough understanding.

If his customer has brand name issues with Behringer... it's only money.

I wouldn't expect to find a number of cheaper solutions to shop from. How much is he willing to pay to avoid Behringer?

Yes - I understand exactly what an automixer does.  I realize it doesn't "mix" in the traditional sense, but it will keep the overall level consistent when all the speakers talk at once rather one at a time.  Of course, that assume proper gain setup in the first place.

Completely understand that there won't be anything cheaper than Behringer, but hoping to find something cheaper than a QL1... which I think I have found in the QU16.
