NO DRINKS!
« on: June 08, 2023, 08:20:16 PM »

Has anyone found a way to keep audience and musicians from putting drinks on the subs? Some type of physical barrier that is placed on top of the cabinet?

Foam wedges that make it impossible for a drink to stay on the sub without sliding off.

I like that idea a lot. I had thought of egg crate foam but I realized someone was bound to set a drink on it and it would then tip over and spill.

The presence of a Guillotine blade that drops when something crosses over the top of the sub?  The blood will be messier but the recidivism rate is very low.

Back when I worked in places where drinkers could get within reach of any production equipment I had some bumper stickers that said "No drinks here" and tipped a waitress to bus any drinks she saw there.  After the 2nd night she said "don't bother tipping me, I'm making plenty selling replacement drinks.  I just point to the sign."

Back when I had an install in a bar with one sub/side, I made a couple of wedges out of 3/4" ply the width and depth of the sub top and at about a 30 degree sideways (long side) angle, and stuck rubber adhesive weatherstripping to the bottom to keep them from rattling/sliding. Those worked pretty well to keep drinks off.

When that gig disappeared, I kept them and they are about the right height and angle to ramp up to a curb, so they've been useful in a variety of ways.

Tilt the subs forward 15 degrees

Center couple the subs in front of the stage if drinks aren't allowed on the dance floor for safety reasons - which is almost always the case. One spilled drink, one fall, and there's a lawsuit. In my past, security and staff have done a pretty good job at monitoring the situation.

Right now however I'm in a room that allows drinks pretty much everywhere. I've got a couple of subs that have seen the wars for this particular venue.

Not too many places around here have the no drinks on the dance floor rule.  There would be pandemonium if that happened.

As far as fighting it, you have a few options.

1. Position the subs so they are not accessible by guests. That limits the problem then to those with access to the area.  Less people to convince it's not a good idea.  Clearly not an option in some smaller venues though.

2. Go through the effort of making the surface of the sub not drink friendly.  Of course, this also helps to make it not dance friendly at the same time.

3. Accept the fact that people are going to put things on handy flat surfaces.  Unless you're still using rat fur covered subs, cleaning off a spilled drink from a sub usually isn't that huge of a deal.  Otherwise, pick up some weatherproof covers from UnderCover NYC.  Those are far easier to hose off after the show, keeping your subs pristine.

Bit of a sledgehammer solution, but it looks like it works.
