$20k Budget - Mobile Rig w/ Strong Sub-Bass Response
« on: May 17, 2023, 08:23:33 PM »

Long time no talk,

I'm in the market for a mobile setup that 2 people can setup / tear down. Max budget is $20k (Maybe a little bit over) and this would need to include amps (if needed) and all the speakers / processing. I want strong sub-bass response if possible and completely happy looking at used setups. Now MEGA used (KF850 / SB1000 rigs) are a little too big / heavy for my taste at this age, but I'm open to any ideas. This is mainly for EDM DJ playback type stuff (Bigger artists) in 500 cap rooms. Oh and one more thing, I'd like it to all run off 2 20 amp circuits.

I've been looking at the Yamaha DZR315 tops (x4), but I'm open to any ideas here. Would love to hear your feedback / suggestions.

Thanks for taking the time to provide your opinions. I really appreciate it.

If you want lower frequencies (ie hitting 30-40hz) I would be looking at newer subs, they tend to go lower.

Bang for buck perhaps check out Bass Boss.

Depending on your desired SPL your budget will not be enough.

So:
1) What SPL are you trying to create (C or Z weighted might be more applicable here)
2) What is the average area you are trying to cover?

So you want an egg laying milk pig?  You are unlikely to do this on 2, 20 amp circuits.

Uses 2 20 amp circuits
Strong Sub-Bass Response
$20k budget

Pick any two...

Outside of DIY, I don't see Strong Sub-Bass and $20k budget even being realistic.

Back in the day, if you had a good dealer, asked nicely, and ordered more than 1, you could get JBL SRX828SPs (powered dual 18" subs) for $1700 each, tax and shipping included.

So, you could have gotten (eight) of these for less than $14,000.  You probably could have added (4) of the 835s (to splay 2 per side) and been right on budget, if not $1,000 or so, over.

But, not running on (2) 20 amp circuits.  And prices are higher, these days.   :)

Does someone really need EIGHT SRX828's for 500 cap gigs? Geeze...I get DJs like bass but that seems just nutty.

You can get (4) new active Orbit Shifters for about 15K. that would leave you 5K for noise makers up top.

This was definitely something I was looking at.

Re: The 2x 20 amp circuits. I had a setup that did a pretty great job with it. It was 4x Void Nexus XL + 2 Void Tri-Motion that did a pretty good job (1 Powesoft K20 + 1 Powersoft 4 channel amp (Can't remember the name).

I was thinking JTR, he may be able to get 4 Danley 18"'s and a Danley NE: linea power amp.  He would be on his own for tops.  I like the idea of 3 ways allows you to push the crossover point down.

JBL VRX932LA's on top, powered by an iTech 6k used (amp and speakers) would push his budget to 26k or so but he would have tops that could keep up with the bottoms and people would think they are line arrays :-).  The most expensive part of the whole setup is the ground stack frames at $600/ea. You could also use the pole cup, I have done that with Hercules crank stands right behind the subs and used the sub delay finder in audio tools to tie it all together.

Josh - Does this budget have to include any power distro, cases, wheel boards, monitors, mixers, microphones, stands and other bits and pieces to make it a "system"?
