Powered VRX repair / rain advice
« on: June 04, 2023, 01:20:14 PM »

Hi all,

Does anyone have experience repairing the amp modules in powered VRX932 and VRX918 boxes? I've been experiencing a number of amp failures lately, (seemingly for different reasons) and have now had to order two replacement 932 amps and a 918 amp.

JBL's service manual basically shows the amp module as one piece, so I think I know what the answer is, but hoping to hear from pros with more experience on the VRX (newbie alert, this is my first A1 job).

Relatedly: this system lives on a boat, and our shows happen rain or shine. Running a successful show in inclimate weather is part of the job - this weekend we delt with plenty of sideways ran (pic attached). Any weather-proofing and/or system longevity advice is welcome - even tips on how to do set & strike without getting your gear soaked.

Thanks in advance.

How old are these cabinets? I ran VRX systems outdoors in all kinds of weather for many years but NEVER the powered versions. The amps were always located in a location where they were protected from weather. This is a huge advantage for "passive" systems when running in the rain.

But none of them are really weather rated. From the VRX LAP manual "The VRX Series loudspeakers covered by this manual are not intended for fixed installation in outdoor or high moisture environments".

Short of replacing the speakers with something designed to work in all weather, Undercover NYC is THE authority in aftermarket speaker covers. The convection cooled amp module might be an issue but could be worthwhile to reach out them to see if they have a solution. https://www.undercovernyc.com

+1 for undercover NYC. I don’t do ANY outdoor shows without their covers on my speakers.

Ok, I’ll pile on.
UndercoverNYC built us some very custom covers for our powered flown boxes and they work great. Excellent product and excellent folks to work with.

If ever I heard a use case for non-powered speakers this is it. Amp racks can live in dry places while the speakers are out in the elements.
