I had a walk-up gig on a Si Impact maybe 7 years ago and I was not a fan of the UI and absolutely tiny, hard to read screen. While I haven't spent any time on any Soundcraft desks since then, so my experience is anecdotal and in no way a fair reflection of the product as a whole, I cannot imagine even considering one given the absolute lack of updates to the product line.

The X32 producer is a rack mount version of the X32 family, but is lacking the scribble strip screens, so working with multiple layers can become challenging.

The X32 rack is a beautiful small mixer and you can pair it with a X-Touch if you want limited fader controls available.  The Xtouch does let you access a lot of different controls of the mixer, but it's challenging to get to sometimes.  For something where you only want them to adjust fader volumes, it's a great choice.

The X32 system doesn't have a feature to lock out certain parts of the board though.  Even with the app, you have full access to everything.  If you do want to set up some restrictions, you can use the Mixing station app.  However, the restrictions have to be set up on each device, not globally assigned in any way.

It's hard to go wrong with the X32 line, as they are EVERYWHERE and pretty much everyone will know how to use it.

The A&H line is a good product as well, but far less common to see out in the field.

Like Debbie, I went from a MixWiz to digital also.  I chose to go to a surface less rack mount with the X32 Rack ..... which was a huge change.

Since I am an electrical engineer (and a geek), I was able to review lots of video's, drawings, etc and understand the much more complex routing of a digital mixer without much problem. 

Considering your description of your friend, I also recommend the Qu 16.  It is as close to a "Digital MixWiz" as it gets so your friend should enjoy all the flexibility of digital mixing in a routing package that is mostly similar to the MixWiz.

As far as ubiquity is concerned, if you are interested in having other people understand your mixer, there is no substitute for the X32 system.  There are simply 10:1 of these mixers out there compared to other digital mixers and therefore it is much more likely to find someone else that knows how to use it.

I wouldn't know about any warranty problems since I haven't had any since 2013 when I bought my X32 Rack (one of the first off the boat).  None of my friends that have the console version have had any issues either .... I think issues are rare, but when they occur, it seems getting help from Music Tribe is not a very easy path according to those that have dealt with it.

I don't know if it has been stated yet, but the QU series of mixers can only support two iPads at a time FOR FOH MIX*


For the band I'm working with, most are using iPads for music and lyric prompts - and task-switch to (in this case) the QSC Touchmix to adjust their IEM, then switch back to the memory-aid role. 


As much as I like the A&H, this IP stack limitation is a deal breaker in the situation above.*

Yes! Two running the Q Pad full control and up to eight running the QU You monitor mix app, it will run on both Apple and Android. There is also the Q Control App.

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations. I was originally leaning towards the tribe products, the experiences you've all mentioned regarding customer support is an issue for me. I've normally been a Soundcraft guy, but the lack of any updates, etc, is turning me off.

From what I've read in all the replies here, it looks like A&H Qu is probably to way to go. Now, to figure out which model he'd  prefer...Qu16, Qu SB, or Qu Pac.

My experience with TransAmerica Group, the A-H distributor, is not good.  We were buying 5 full size mixers and TA never followed through with promised demo unit. If they can't bother, I won't, either. We bought 6 figures worth of Yamaha and Avid desks.
