+1 for Soundcraft UI24.
It has the best ipad, etc. interface IMHO. 
Super configurable.
You do need to add a wireless router, but pretty much all the lunchbox mixers had shitty wifi.

Midas M32R-LIVE is about the same footprint as a Mixwiz, far greater in capability. Same essential operation as the X32 you are familiar with.

This is the way to go. If you can deal with a larger, non-rack-mountable footprint, the X32 Compact will absolutely fit the bill for significantly less coin (but with the same feature set and arguably a more intuitive physical button layout). We have a Compact in the shop and it goes out more than any other desk. Easy, powerful and, well, compact.

Natural progression from mixwizard is QU but the QU has weird aux assignments of 4 mono and 3 stereo unless you pretend the 3 stereo aux outs are mono and just use the L. QU is non-expandable channel-wise so what you see is what you get. SQ is what the QU should have been but its more complicated to use as a walk up console unless you sit down and learn it at home. Of course there's the x32 family but I'm weary of the nonexistant support from the Tribe, so if the console breaks, sell it for parts and buy another new one. Finally there's the new Yamaha DM3 thats really compact, might want to have a look at that one.

TL,DR: QU16, SQ5, x32 compact/M32R, DM3. Take your pick.

When I moved to digital I went with a Soundcraft Expression 3 and have no regrets. At work we have have many, many Soundcraft Expression 1s (16 channel version). The workflow is super easy to understand and has a very analog feel to it. Since Soundcraft hasn't updated anything in a decade, there might be better options out there like the new Yamaha DM3.

The QU series has some quirky things to it on the aux side of things.

The soundcraft boards are nice on their own, but if you're using an iPad to control it and have a poor network signal, they've got a nasty issue with their network stack that can take out the entire board requiring a full reboot to get back in business.  Kind of a dealbreaker there.

I really don't understand the 'quirky' aux comments. 4 mono plus 3 stereo (or 7 mono)  as standard and then a bunch more stereos if using the D Snake.  Also you can get 4 stereo (or 8 mono) without the snake if you use the alt out. I do not see this as quirky or limiting.
Plus the Allen & Heath support has been fantastic over the years and that is priceless.

Had a Performer  do the «trick» on me on a festival gig, not fun.

It doesn't happen all the time, clearly. However, if you have a poor wifi signal and just the right scenario, it can happen. And when it does, it's bad.  I've personally seen it happen on more than one console in different locations. Both had poorly implemented WIFI, so if you have a good connection with the access point nearby, you may never see the problem.

I really don't understand the 'quirky' aux comments.

A quick note on the "quirky" auxes on the QU. Like Debbie, I have a QU pack – the “faderless” member of the QU series – which I use for small events. I wanted 4 monitor mixes and an aux-fed sub output that works correctly with stereo and mono sources. Well, you can use a stereo aux as a mono aux so long as you’re coming from a mono source but a mono aux from a stereo source requires a true mono aux that sums the two stereo channels. Putting the sub on AUX 1, which a true mono aux, and the monitors on AUX 2, 3 , 4 and 5 solves the problem. Although AUX 5 is a stereo aux it’s OK as it only derives from mono sources (mics). Self-evident perhaps, but it took me longer than it should have to think of this workaround.

Overall I'm very pleased with the QU pack.
