Sub Amps - 4000-4500w @ 4ohms per channel.
« on: March 30, 2023, 10:52:58 AM »

What are some good amps to drive subs?  I'm looking for 4000-4500w @ 4ohms per channel.

Years ago I was bridging an XTi4000 into a SRX728, it was alright and then switched to an IT8000 and it was a night and day difference; holy cow did the SRX728s move some air.  Well then I took a few years off (and sold everything) and when I got back into it, I picked up the SRX828SP (FAIL!).  Now I picked up some Custom built dual 18s with B&C drivers and looking for a beefy sounding amp.  Right now, I have a Clair iO with Gruppen FP9000 to hold me over until I can get a bigger amp.

The Crown iTech HD amps are solid performers. Prices are currently through the roof though on them.  About double what they were just a couple years ago on the used market.

The Studiomaster QX2-xxxx amps output big power, and are inexpensive.

Linea amps work great on subs, the new Danley D series amps should be great on subs as well.  The new Powersoft line is worth a good look, but they are new and I don't know how many have bench tested them yet.   Used Powersoft K20 or X4L.

Regardless of brand, I'd run them on 208V (240V) power, otherwise you won't get max output.

Used K10/K20 or FP14000 should do it.
I got K20 on some DIY 2x18", they're pretty impressive with that amp.
Also serviced a couple of KF730 installations with FP14000 for lows with good results.

Dynacord IPX20:4 or TGX20.   They are my go to for all high end stadium and arena projects.

The Powersoft K10 was end-of-life on 12/31/19 and the K20 on 12/31/20.  I'm not certain what that entails from a future product support/repair situation, but I can tell you that the DSP modules for the K series are out of stock.  In other words, you can no longer buy a 'dumb" K3 and send it to Powersoft to get a DSP card installed.  At least that is what I was told by Powersoft's west coast repair technician last year.  In the same vain, Crown's original XTi & I-Tech series are no longer supported by Crown, but in another thread here there's a link to a place in Cali that is still working on them.  My cousin has an original XTi 4k that needs some TLC and he received a quote of $375 plus shipping to repair it, which is just about the current replacement cost for one in good, used condition.  An I-tech 8k could still be a good way to go, just know that repairs could be expensive or even not possible depending on parts availability.

Really it's whatever you can get used. Nobody has big amps in stock right now. Linda Research seems to be delivering the most with Dynacord on their heels.

I know where there are a couple dozen ITech HD 12000.  Expect to pay market price, quantity discount available, I'm told.  I have no current affiliation with the owner.

Clair has used PLM20,000Q right now. Pricier than they were a few years ago but these have been solid performers for us on subwoofers. 4ch @ 4ohms 4500w per channel. When you get them from Clair, they come with a warranty.

https://thetonegarage.com in Oxnard CA is the #1 place for "End of Service" Crown amp repair/servicing.  I tried to get an XTI 4000 serviced once that died on a gig. Neither Crown nor AE Techron, an independent shop of ex-Crown employees, would touch it. For the price of shipping, Tone Garage evaluated it, and determined it wasn't worth fixing, but instead I upgraded to a very nice, freshly serviced ITech 4000 from them that has performed flawlessly since. There are relative bargains to be had out there with EOS Crowns, and so far Tone Garage is able to fix the ones worth fixing.
