Millenial here. I start most of my days by making a cup of coffee and catching up on new posts here. That being said, I know I'm in the minority among my demographic. I have a feeling a lot of younger folks don't even know these forums exist for similar reasons why newspapers are going out of print, it's just no longer the preferred method of consumption. I find them constructive, useful and much less "noisy" than other mediums or groups. To each their own.

For what it's worth, I've also seen lots of people much older than me with the same approach. People have been misunderstanding our trade and looking for shortcuts since it's inception, and that's one thing that will never change.

I guess my son is a secondhand user of the forum. If there is an issue he needs to crack and can't find it through his usual channels, he will ask me, and I may put it out here for help. It's a good resource, and agree way more signal-to-noise than most other forums that touch on pro audio.

After 46 years at the University I am retiring as of April 30th. If you need me swing by the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg. I'll spring for popcorn* and a soda.
 When anyone asks the expected "what will you do", I tell them I have been taking recliner surfing lessons.

It is interesting "looking back" to 2004 at posts/discussions I never knew existed (I lurked for a while and then registered in 2011) but I do see some "interesting posts" from a Mike M (not me) before my time....

A little history: I did run across a review of a northeast speaker shoot-out in MA (in 2008-09??).
If memory serves me correctly it took place in a room at a ski area (Mt. Wachusett) and happened mid-week.
The names: Bennett P, R. Spence, among others are legendary.

The event was 50 miles away (local) and I wanted to attend but I at that point in my life I was in the middle of "working a FT day job, gigging every weekend, two young children at home...w/a wife that is less-than-pleased that I was out gigging every weekend..."

(The above being said, if I had attended the event it would not have worked out too well for me...)

I wanted to bring my TX9s subs / Itech6000 amp to compare....

Oh well.

Now I have some early morning reading to do!

As an older Millennial, I greatly appreciate all the wisdom found on this forum! I very rarely post anywhere, as I find I learn more by simply absorbing the knowledge shared by those much wiser than me. I forget where I picked it up, but I remember hearing one time "you can't learn anything with your mouth open" and that has led me on a journey of reading, watching videos, and just listening to those in person who have knowledge to share.

So, thank you to all who do regularly post here! Whether you realize it or not, you are passing knowledge to the next generation.

I do wish there was more traffic around here, but I think we are all a dying breed. The kids are interacting on sites that operate on confirmation bias. Youtube, Reddit, TikTok. Nobody wants to come here and have their viewpoints challenged it seems. BBS's are dying in general it seems. I'm on a few and only one is really still active, but it's mostly BS'ing and less about the cars the forum is about.....

A couple of things have changed recently.  The shift to digital boards leads to less discussion on outboard gear-graphic vs parametric eq, what compressor, gate, etc. because they are included on most mixers and you can try them-and experimentation is even easier because settings can be saved and changed easily. 

And yes, the younger generation and social media which seems to prefer video and drama over facts and scientific advice.  I have appreciated the solid advice on here that is backed by experience-something the younger generation doesn't always appreciate.  Though in fairness, the older I get the more I realize I don't know.

Stephen, you might be old enough to remember UseNet (which 99.8% of today's internet users have never heard of, let alone used).  I don't know if rec.audio.pro is still active but 22 years ago it was quite... uh... special.  It's where people went who wanted to talk about perception of amplified audio but not particularly about the underlying physics of transmission and the influence of time-based things in audition.

Mac or Dave McDermont will hopefully correct me, but where we are now started as a special interest group on Compuserve, then became an email list-serve, and then Dave Stevens acquired the domain name "www.live- audio.com" and used a Perl script from Matt's Script Archive to initially start these forums.  The script was reinforced, rewritten, and eventually replaced because it couldn't handle the amount of traffic the site generated.  After the sale of EAW, Ken Berger and Stevens made the upgrade in software, look and feel, and using a data center (the first live-audio.com server was in Dave's apartment, and later on his desk at Carlson Audio in Seattle.  Hiya, Mark C!
