Hey all, here's my latest https://www.prosoundweb.com/listen-to-this-a-console-upgrade-turns-into-a-lesson-on-the-sonic-quality-of-tracks/
Bit of a departure from RF and Road Stories but has some relevance to the "PA Test Tracks" thread.
Thanks for reading!
Update: Here's a link to some music that was recorded in the studio in the article, tracked and mixed on the MCI-628 by the engineer that I worked with on it.

Good read Ike, thanks for sharing.
Reminds me of an experience last year when ripping my CD library to FLAC format into a master DJ library music store. I picked up a CD of a 70's group named "The Raspberries" for a popular song "Go all the way" from the first generation the Classic Rock era. The CD sounds horrible, if not the worst certainly one of the worst in the collection.
Yes indeed, sound quality varies widely on CD's sometimes disappointingly so.

I recall writing about this back during the early days of CD format. Some early CD releases used existing master tapes that were sweetened (boosted HF) for vinyl. These could result in harsh sounding tracks. Later CD releases should be better matched to the format, but all mixes are subjective.

That was an interesting read. Really making me think. One thing I've noticed about Yes trax is that they don't sound all that good on my PA. Steely Dan however sounds excellent.
Dave Garoutte:
My son came by one day listening to some music on his phone with earbuds.
I asked him what and he showed me an MP3, which I had a hi-res version on my FiiO (fairly high quality DAP).
I plugged my headphones into his phone and had him listen. Then to the FiiO.
Definitely jaw drop moment.
