Hi Guys,
I'm looking to convert a home karaoke studio into a small start up Atmos production studio. I was just wondering if anyone could point me in a direction of a good forum or website that I could ask some questions for doing so. I was over at the R/E/P forum and doesn't really seem set up for what I am looking for or no where to post that made any sense. I am looking for something along the lines of LAB lite or lounge. Atmos and other immersive formats are sort of the wild west right now. There's not a lot of common or best practices and the people who are doing it are making up a lot of it themselves. Dolby has some technical documents with specifications on speakers and placement for their theatre type installs and mastering suites. But if you're using it for music, it's basically whatever you want it to be.

The guys that I know that are doing Atmos are usually doing most of their mixing on headphone and then doing final proofing in a studio that they rent time in. They have also adopted the workflow of doing their traditional editing, mixing and mastering in stereo; getting all the EQ, dynamics and mixing done in a traditional format, and then exporting stems to use in the immersive part of the mix, which sort of takes over as the mastering stage. They are not trying to edit and do polish mixing in the immersive environment.

I own a small remote truck and recently purchased a pile of cheap speakers and a Focusrite Red R1 to use as monitor controller for a small Atmos (and L-ISA) system in my truck. I have yet to have any amount of free to deal with the install however.

I mixed on an L-Acoustics L-ISA system on tour for two years. The immersive stuff is pretty amazing when done right, but takes a pretty fair bit of leg work and more expensive gear to do right.

I don't know of an immersive audio focused forum. I've been thinking about starting one myself.

PS; I have been dealing with surround sound playback decoding since the 70s.... when it was much simpler.

Surround sound isn't really the same thing as immersive. Immersive uses psycho-acoustics to place sound in a 3 dimensional space, even when there isn't a speaker there. Surround is just a big circular panner.


Maybe we should start an immersive forum here. There are many different systems and formats I think it could be a niche that deserves it's own subforum.

Immersive is an ENORMOUS rabbit hole that can really lead to some lively and interesting conversations. I'd love to see more on this topic on here.
