Thanks all for the education.   I saw the kill-a-watt units but im a little reluctant to put something that might fail between my speakers and the power source.  Are they pretty reliabl at least to keep passing power through?

These are reliable and tolerate abuse
Extech AC line splitter
And lets you use your clamp meter of choice. 
I have an ancient analog one that allows you to watch the needle dance and get a more realistic idea of turn-on surges or sub amp draw.
