Power Amp recommendations
« on: January 23, 2023, 05:08:44 PM »

At my church we need to replace an older power amp: Yamaha P2075 - 2 channel/50 watts per channel.  In my haste, I purchased a Gemini GPA-2500 but the fans were way too loud for our small sanctuary. What would you recommend that would be either fanless or with very quiet fans. I does not need to be very powerful as it only runs 4 speakers under the balcony.

Thanks!

Look a Crown XLS1002 decent price and the fan is quite if it even runs at all.
You can also set high pass filtering in the amp and helpful for under balcony fill speakers.

Dump the Gemini as soon as possible!!!!

Thanks Mike. I'll look into the Crown but I was hoping there was something else that might be a little less expensive.

Check out the ART SLA-1 @ $300. It does have a fan despite the description but it is really quiet. I've put them in church racks out in the open.

Scott beat by about an hour, I was going to mention the ART SLA series.

Also look for a clean used Crown XLS1000, older version of the 1002.

I looked at reviews for the ART SLA-1 and there were inconsistent complaints or mentions about fan noise - some said hardly noticeable and others said too loud. Not sure what to do with that info.

Sometimes one must consider the source for reviews - not always what they appear to be.

I have a ART SLA-1 sitting here beside me in my studio rack which is a 3-way setup driving the HF section of near field studio monitors.

ART SLA-2 in a 3-Way rack for portable PA jobs.

Both are great amps and quiet.  I've never heard the fan in either rack.  The studio rack is connected to 3 computers with a Crown XTi 1002 driving the subwoofer.  After some loud listening or gaming the fan in the XTi 1002 is audible for a few minutes until the amp cools down, SLA-1 is quiet.

Thank you! That's exactly the kind of thing I came here to find out.  I'll wait a little while longer to see if anyone else has a suggestion before I pull the trigger.
