Shure PA411 combiner and PSM300 IEM's
Sam Costa:
Hi everyone,
I have a PA411 combiner installed at the very top in one of my M32c racks. Mounted below are 4 - PSM300 units all wired to the PA411. The 1/2 wave antenna was replaced with a 10'ft coaxial cable from a reputable shop. I place the antenna on a small tripod stand and raise it about 4'ft above the rack so that it clears the musicians heads and has a more direct line of sight while on stage, and I still have some instances where we are having some interference issues, especially the guitar player who is only about 12-15ft away from the antenna. I'm making sure when this system is used that nobody has any cell phones in their pockets ad that the body packs are mounted outside their clothing with the antennas exposed.
Now, I do still have the wifi router that controls my M32c which is mounted on the back of the digital rack. I would think that the router is at least 5'ft away from the IEM antenna and wouldn't cause issues, but could this still be the reason I'm getting these interference issues? I'm thinking of removing the router about 10'ft from the rack when deployed to see if this solves the interference issues but looking for any other ideas?
Thanks.

Clear channel scan?
FWIW, I use a PA805 instead of the whip/rabbit ear. I once had the PA805 next to my UAP AC Mesh antenna and had no interference.

I think a paddle would be better than the whip.
On a separate note, Very tidy setup! If you made a socket that mounted in the top of the case, you could eliminate the tripod and just have the upright with the antenna. Even cleaner.

Hi Sam-
You might run this by the folks over in the RF and Communications sub forum, but I'd look at the antenna on the guitarist's IEM pack. Is it 'fiddly' or otherwise feel like it could be making intermittent contact?
Another possibility is a bad cable or termination between the guitarist's IEM transmitter and its combiner input. Use another IEM receiver and tune it to the guitarist's transmitter. If the drop outs stop, the problem is with the guitarist's receiver pack. If the drop outs are unchanged the problem is on the xmit side.

Hey Sam,
I assume that at the very least, you're performing scans on the units at each event you service? There is a method to this (outlined pretty well in the PSM300 manual) that you'll want to make sure you follow.
In addition to the suggestions of using something like a PA805, it may be time to incorporate some sort of RF scanning tool and coordination software into your routine. Especially if you're adding more RF, like wireless mics along side the IEM systems.
Next time you're in the South Bay stop by the shop and I'll give you quick rundown of my workflow with Wireless Workbench.
