Ah yes, who in this business in Ontario hasn't done some form of "a piece of thinly disguised provincial government propaganda"?

For me it was in 2002, 6 months of mixing monitors for OLG at every small town fair ground, horse track, parking lot or even one farmers field, across the province. Some places we couldn't even find on a map.

This was two semis and two buses, so it wasn't small, just thinly disguised! I will try to get round to writing that one up for 2023.

This was two semis and two buses, so it wasn't small, just thinly disguised! I will try to get round to writing that one up for 2023.

What we rolled up with wasn't small either- one semi was the stage and roof, the second semi was audio and lighting and we would set up on a Wednesday and typically load out the following Monday. The stage trailer had a genset built in so we were self contained, but the main problem was that about half of the events we rolled up to were used to a flat bed trailer for the stage, or the local service club's show mobile, or something MUCH smaller than what we supplied.

When I got the gig the production manager made comments about it being a "Dog and Pony Show tour" which I thought was a joke, but no we actually did provide sound reinforcement for both Dog shows and Pony shows on many occasions. And a bird show, a baby show, more than one sheep show, reptile shows...

I'm looking forward to the next Road Story!

Best (not the greatest monetary value, but the best overall) tip I every received was a bottle of 17 year old Highland single malt. (No comment from the Speysiders required ;D )

I mixed The Fifth Dimension on a one-off about 15 years ago.  Got a lovely hand-written thank you card and a $20 tip.

A few months ago I mixed a "band you've heard of" when the BE got ill en-route to the show, got a $200 tip which I split with our ME.

Lexi Walker, a young YouTube star singer, makes these adorable little gift bags with chocolates and handmade personalized thank you notes for every crew member on every show she does. I've mixed her twice and she is an amazing talent, but her genuine appreciation for the people she works with really stands out.

here's a season appropriate sample of what this girl can do...

Anyone who can sound good on a beta 87 has some talent!
