USB-C video out and in options
« on: November 17, 2022, 01:46:09 PM »

I'm looking for something that will do USB-C in to 3G-SDI and Balanced audio out. Does such a grand beast exist?

I'd like to be able to get presentations and other content out of a laptop and into my switcher SDI inputs without HDMI being an intermediary. I've been frustrated with too many dongles and docking station and HDMI plugs coming disconnected on a whim.

Also interested in the same thing in reverse. Aja U-Tap will handle the SDI stream, but I'd rather handle the audio mix outside of my ATEM switcher.

But this is not USB-C (DP/HDMI) to SDI converter.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Just edited my OP to add:

No, but that led me to this:

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/ultrastudio/techspecs/W-DLUS-13

Which looks like it may do what I want.

I've got the input version of this and it works great inside it's limitations.  It's what I first thought of when I read your post except it's thunderbolt not USB-C.  While some systems do both through the same port it's not a given.  IIRC your software needs to support it.  It does not just add another desktop like adding an external monitor.  My go-to remains a Decimator MD-HX taking HDMI in and putting out SDI.  That way it works with any device that has an HDMI output.  The only hiccup being HDCP but I have another box that I use for stripping HDCP when necessary.  The BM device you linked does simplify that all at the expense of being bound to specific software.  You're not going to get powerpoint out through the ultrastudio monitor.

There are lots of HDMI audio extractors out there.
It took several tries to get one that does 5.1, which I needed.
If you only need stereo, I have two either of which I'll give you.
The BMD device you showed has an HDMI out you could route to the extractor.

I had missed that you were also looking to get audio out.  Forget getting the audio off of the video output.  Just grab a USB DI (Peavey, Radial, etc) and route your audio out that.  There's no reason you need to monkey around trying to get the audio off of the video output, that's just unnecessarily complicated.

The problem with the ultra studio boxes is that they don't support desktop output.  That's my experience on Macs anyway.
They work great with QLab and the editing packages that support them for direct output, but not Powerpoint and Keynote.  The feature to use the desktop out has been promised a few times, but not delivered yet.

PTZCam has a unit that solves the SDI portion of the equation.

Aside from that, an AJA IO4K Plus would work, but it’s Thunderbolt vs USB.
