DPA Headsets 4288 vs 4488
« on: January 22, 2023, 02:30:03 PM »

Looking at DPA 4288 vs 4488 and wondering which is easier and better for durability and ease of use as far as getting them set up on talent where multiple users are involved. I know the 4088's have been regarded as the best when customized for a single performer but that's not what we do.

I've used the 4288 and they seem to provide a nice comfortable result but the 4488 is supposed to be more adaptable. I haven't played with one yet.

4488 is quicker to mount, but 4288 has a bit more reach for different head sizes IME.
I mostly do shows with 6066 and 4466 these days, both work really well, easy to mount on different people.

I always seem to be wrestling with feedback with omni headsets from AKG and countryman. I've only used the cardioid from DPA and they provided amazing results. My shows are small so talent is usually pretty close to the mains.

I'm still in awe of how far DPA outperforms anything else with respect to getting good sound in a variety of situations

I only have 4266's in my inventory (and just 6 of them), but I've used 4066 and 6066 plenty over the years. I haven't used the 4466, but the mounting is the same at the 6066. And while I prefer omni headsets, obviously they don't fit any differently than a cardioid, so you can easily translate my comments to your use case.

I love the 4266 because it's lightweight and very comfortable. It's also very easy to covert between single and double ear, if that's something you ever need to do. It's not the easiest to get on quickly, or for those who aren't used to how they work, which I think is its only negative.

The 4066 is fine. It goes on quick, and feel OK. I think the 4466/6066 is better though. The ear loops feel more comfortable (to me), and folds up into its case easier. I don't know that I can comment on durability, since they've all held up well for me, but I think the 4466/6066 probably has a slight edge in that regard. If I were in your position, and choosing between the models you mentioned, I would go with the 4488. Especially if the speed of swapping between users is a high priority. Just my opinion.
