Bent Fader on M32R
« on: July 03, 2022, 07:50:14 AM »

I bent a fader on my board last night putting the lid on the case.  Bummer!  The good news is that the fader still operates fine and is functional.  It just bothers me looking at the bent stem.  I’m wondering if anyone has tried bending one of these back in to position without removing the fader from the board or am I just better off leaving it as is?  The OCD in me wants it back in position!  I appreciate any insight!  Have a great weekend!

I bent a fader on my board last night putting the lid on the case.

A friend insists on putting all the faders to the top of their travel after power off to reduce the chance of this happening.

I'd assume it's better to take the fader out before attempting to straighten it.

That lets you see if there's any other damage that might have been done, and hopefully gives a better chance at straightening it without causing any further stress to the fader or its connections in the process.

That's just a generalisation though, I have no specific experience with the M32 desks.

Replace it. If it still works you can keep using it until the replacement arrives. Trying to bend it back could make matters worse.

Plus, you can keep the bent (or straightened) one as a spare for next time. ::)

and on the M32, I understand, the faders are all attached with plugs rather than soldered making replacement easier.

Mark,

Having a spare fader is not a bad investment.

That said, I've bent many faders with shafts similar to the M-32 fader back into original shape without removing them, using a vise grip pliers.

Yes, there is a possibility of breaking the metal, or causing a rub.
Removing the fader before straightening would make the operation easier.

Here is an ad with a picture of the replacement:
M32 Fader
No idea on this dealer but the direct from China EBAY sellers have prices more than triple that for a single fader.

Don't try to turn the fader cap, they break! The best way is to simply take the cap off and then use a pair of mole grips (not sure if you US chaps call those something else- locking wrenches??) Adjust them so they clamp onto the bent bit sticking up and then just gently rotate the fader back to the right orientation, keeping it vertical. I've never broken any doing this. It is best to do it top or bottom as this helps prevent the slider bar being bent.

I'd leave it as is and order a replacement.  When the replacement arrives, I'd give bending it back into place a shot before installing the replacement. If it breaks, then install the new one. If you can get it back into happy position, now you've got a spare in stock when you end up needing one.

Thanks so much for all your insight.  I think I will order a replacement and maybe try to bend back after it arrives.  Leave it now since it’s working.  This forum is a resource for sure!
