Signal Hound BB60C Config?
(1/1)
Andy_Leviss:
I know there are a handful of folks here using BB60Cs as their spectrum analyzer of choice, and am curious if anybody has guidance on optimal sweep and trace settings for best results. I'm especially uncertain as to how the step size and RBW interplay, as well as the impact of various numbers of averages and that sort of thing, since I'm coming from using an RF Explorer with Touchstone Pro or Vantage, and even a TTI isn't quite as configurable as the Signal Hound is.
Any suggestions on good starting points would be greatly appreciated!

Go for what you know. If you have settings from your RFE or a TTi, start with those in the SH and then tweak to taste. It will only get better.

The issue is that there are enough settings where I don't know what I know, LOL...the exponentially faster scan speed means there's a lot of ability to mess with things like sweep time and separate manual adjustment of RBW vs step size that I'm not even 100% sure what the RFE or TTI equivalent is to begin with!

For the purposes of frequency coordination, I personally have had success with a broadband sweep of the usable UHF spectrum (470-700MHz) with a 30-100kHz RBW & VBW. I usually take either a max hold to get a picture of the worst case, or a 10 sweep average.
Once I've calculated frequencies, I take a closer look at each one with a 0.5-1MHz span @ 1kHz RBW.
I've also found the 'Interference Hunting' analysis mode useful- it allows you to create a baseline measurement, and will trigger an alert if any signals not consist with that baseline appear, above a user defined threshold.

Thanks for this, Jordan, that's pretty much where I've landed. The one thing that I keep second guessing is what to set the sweep time to...that's the big thing that isn't really an option on other, slower SAs...
