Isn't This A "No No?"
« on: June 03, 2022, 10:20:31 AM »

I recently installed some high end moving head lighting fixtures from a well known US manufacture at a local venue. They came with some really nice 12ga power cables. Bare wires on one end though, no problem I'll put on some Edison plugs.

I was surprised to see that the bare ends came "tinned." I cut them off and stripped the insulation back before putting on the Edison plugs.

Thoughts?

I don't think the electrons care and there will be less stray strands sticking out. Tinned wire will be less flexible.

Some marine applications prefer tinned copper wire to resist corrosion.

I thought there was a potential issue with cold flow.

As I understand cold flow is an issue, professionals use bootlace ferrules. The ratchet crimpimg tools are cheap enough (or you can get the jaws for standard ratchet crimping tools). Come in both sleeved and unsleeved. In Europe, at least, they are mandated for rewireable plugs on new appliances.

If you are going to put the connectors into compression terminals, you do NOT want tinned ends. Even though it seems convenient, the tinned end will eventually become loose due to solder creep.

Just say "NO" to tinned wires and compression terminations.
