Anyone know Wordpress... and the stuff that goes with it?
« on: May 20, 2022, 11:07:35 AM »

So, I've been forced into having to upgrade my website from HTML to Wordpress.  I know nothing of Wordpress other than the kludge of "education" that I've been giving myself over the last day.  What I have learned, there's far too many components to a "wordpress" website; none of this makes sense!

After watching some YouTube videos covering page-builders, themes, plugins... -sigh- I realized I have no idea WTF I'm doing.  WordPress appears to be way too indepth for a basic "static" website.  The videos I've seen appear to focus on certain plugins... or certain themes... or certain page-builders... or etc... etc...  I understand what WordPress does, but I can't seem to connect any of the dots.

Anyone have Wordpress experience that could direct me to a decent video (YouTube), or a website, covering how to create/setup a Wordpress website?

Thank you.

no how to video, but I set up a wordpress website for my old drum tuner company. website is still alive (i think).  https://circularscience.com

The basic wordpress environment was free from my web provider (IONOS). They are numerous paid add ons that I never invested in.

I found the wordpress world more secure than my old HTML website that was constantly being hacked.

You need to learn a bunch of new secret handshakes but pretty much any similar service will require that.

Hire a student.  Facebook Marketplace would be a good start.  Find a theme you like, there are tons of free themes but it might be worth paying a few bucks to upgrade to something else if it really catches your eye.

A hundred bucks to get someone to do this and show you the ropes as it’s being done would be money well spent IMO. Meet up at your fave coffeeshop with wifi and make an afternoon of it.   What you want done is really easy but I totally get the “connect the dots” frustration with Wordpress web sites.  A simple “how do I” can turn into a hunt.

Thanks John.  Nice simple web site you have!  I need something this simple... maybe I'll revisit the "blank" theme that Wordpress is offering.  Seems there is a lot of stuff available for WordPress that is free... but, I'm finding, not everything is meant to work with everything.

Good idea with hiring a student!  I'll look into this.

Definitely right about a "how do I"...   I feel like there should be a "Louis Leaky" plugin that would guide me through the labyrinth.

Hi Bob, yep, that's the catch.  You can do pretty much anything with a WordPress Site but sorting out compatibility can be tricky.  My site is a Wordpress site as well (http://flashnthunder.com).  It's a "managed" Wordpress Site through InMotion Hosting which I've been happy with.  The tools InMotion offers also helps to address plugin compatibility with the site as a whole.

Like you, I was a holdout on updating to something modern but I'll say that Wordpress coupled with a decent host has some nice benefits - namely better handling of media on your site, automatically adjusting the site format for PC/tablet/phone viewing, search engine optimization, and other little bonuses such as plugins for contact forms and whatnot.  My site is by no means a work of art and is mostly just a landing page for my client referrals versus an e-commerce site or something to attract random potential customers, but overall I've been very happy with my shift to Wordpress.

One of my to-dos has been to convert from http to https.  This is supposedly very simple to do but with business picking up I just haven't gotten around to it...

Hope this helps!

For anyone whose time is better spent on other things besides learning about web hosting, I suggest paying someone else for most of the responsibility of keeping the invisible bits working. My suggestion is to use wordpress.com, squarespace, or another paid software-as-a-service provider.

I use Wordpress for a school alumni site. It's a steep learning curve, but it's also based on modules, which once you understand how it works, a lot of it is finding a template that works for you - then most of the layout is done.

I'm also using Hubspot (free) as a CRM so having to learn more on how the two can integrate, as I want to build pages by class and have it update, but that's a few weekends away.

Anyone who is in or graduated college in the past 5 years is Wordpress savvy and can help.

Thank you for all the feedback on this!  I finally found a decent YouTube video covering WordPress using Elementor.  The video is about an hour long, but took me about 3 hours to get through it due to my stopping the video and trying out the "tasks" on my winblows PC.

At the moment, I've learned a lot and probably enough to move forward with converting my content to WordPress.  I am glad to see others mention compatibility issues between the plugins and themes, and other things.  Your comments validated my experiences.

It's been a struggle, but I think it will work.

Websites went from something that was simple to put together and had relatively easy to use tools to get there to now having to use online tools to put the site together.  Wordpress is nice because there are tons and tons of themes you can use to create pages.  That doesn't mean it's easy though if there's something specific you want to do.  Generally, find a hosting provider and use their templates and tools and you can throw together a collection of pages in a few minutes that automatically adapt to different size screens.

If you decide to actually go out and do it on your own and not use a template, then, yeah, good luck with that.  That's a profession all on its own.

Other tip - just type in search "how do I ___ in Wordpress" as you're not the only one who's asking... it's how I learned this and Hubspot.
