This Jimmy Kimmel set is pretty awesome. Sometimes the TV's are solid colors. That's easy enough, gut them and put a fixture in there. But SOMETIMES they are playing static?!?

So what gives? How are they driving these CRT's?

My guess is that they have LCD screens in there, not CRTs, and they're fed from several computer video outputs.  The one downstage centre is already too thin to have a tube.  LCDs also have the advantage (over CTRs) of having a long enough persistence that frame rate isn't a problem for the video cameras that are shooting this.

Or maybe it's something else.

The ones showing static are actual CRTs not connected to any signal.

The ones with the red "screens"? Just a thin cardboard box with some film (gel?) and a red light driven by a lighting kit.

+1  The red screens are fake TVs.

Instead of LCD screens, often you'll just see LED video wall modules mounted inside.  Much brighter that way.  Controlled then as part of the video wall.

That's a fascinating thing I've seen on a few shows.  Everything on the set is mapped into one huge "video wall", and then the light show control is actually a video animation.  By the end of the show the whole thing is revealed to be capable of playing back (rough) video content.
