Better PC memory use during streaming Sunday service?
« on: May 02, 2022, 03:34:10 PM »

We have one PC dedicated to streaming Sunday mornings. Using vMix to handle input from a Midas digital soundboard. We recently upgraded the PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and at the same time upgraded vMix to the latest version.
In the past, our utilization of CPU etc was about 33% ("Total" in vMix). Now, we're up to 47%. Plus, the Windows tools show oddities like ffmpeg.exe taking up a lot of CPU. We're saving our video file in .ts format not MP4.

Any suggestions about minimizing unused services/process during the service?

Go to system configuration and choose what services and startup items you don't need and disable them.  And make sure that there's only one AV app running.

The TS container can be used with several encoding formats, including mpeg-4.
A modern system may actually be better equipped to encode/decode newer codecs.

I don't have any recent experience with this specific set up but one generally useful thing to check is to ensure you have all video drivers up to date and, if there's a dedicated video card, make sure your software knows about it and has it selected for offloading any video processing or compression or that "hardware acceleration" is turned on anywhere it can be.

Generally speaking, upgrading to newer software rarely reduces the processor load on a computer.  The exception being if there is dedicated hardware for certain processing activities that wasn't being used with the older OS or software.

I like the simplicity of that idea.
But I may test ffmpeg.exe separately to be sure it's not being used....

I can go in during the week and review the drivers etc. Cool.

Why don't big tech companies do stuff the way I want them to?
Yeah you're right. Sad face.

If ffmpeg.exe is using cpu, it's being used by one of your softwares for transcoding. Ffmpeg can use hardware encoders if configured to do so. In this case it's another software that's telling ffmpeg what to do. Probably VMix.

This may be an obvious answer to your question, but what are the specs of said PC? How old is it?

Corey you stole my thunder .ts is for DVD and Blu Ray it uses mpeg as it's CODEC.  Besides FFMPEG supports more than MPEG it transcodes many formats.
