Extending stage ties/snake
Matthias McCready:
Hey All,
So the venue where I work got partially remodeled. I got a new PA (woot woot), but that was about it (not a pretty engineering room).
So I am wanting to extend and rebuild what is coming off the stage. I probably don't have enough time to pull new cable, and things are working.
Goals:
1) Current cabling tails are install grade, want to have better quality tails with strain relief (current stuff has none).
2) I need to extend the cable's about 10-15ft (into a rack and out over or below my stage box)
----
So what I was thinking of:
1) Belden 8412 for cabling (I have some nice number Nuetrik's with colored boots already for the ends.
2) Tech Flex FLEXO PET (.25 inch size) that corresponds to boot color and staging.
----
So my questions:
1) If you were doing such a project what materials would you use? I want to do things right.
2) What is the best way to connect and extend 60+ XLR cables? A coworker suggested something like this . Is that a good direction?
3) Anything I am missing?
Thanks!

Mike Caldwell:
Are these tails something that gets disconnected, moved, rolled up ect. or just a fixed connection from point A to point B and left in place?
What need strain relief?
From the sound of it I'm thinking it's more a point A to B fixed connection.
How are the end of the existing cables terminated at this time?
If it's just a fixed, put it in place and there it stays something like West Penn 454 would be fine.
Post a picture of what your working with.

I don't have a picture of things, I will try to get one later this week. I do have a picture of a similar setup (close to what I am trying to achieve).
These are cables coming from various pockets around the stage, so I have 60ish male XLR connectors from stage.
So cables get moved as I patch different things in different places. For example if an electric player is using an amp, or playing on a different side of the stage etc. I keep the head-amp the same so that it is consistent inputs for the session files and multitracking.
---
Previously all the cable ran into an analog snake on the wall, recently I put the digital stagerack in engineering. So the cables have to reach to that rack, which is farther than where they landed previously and it is not tidy.
So I am wanting to extend the cables and to feed them through the stage rack, similar to the linked picture.
Hopefully that helps to clear it up some? :)
Thanks!

What about solder the existing install-grade cables into the back of a tech plate, and then just order some fan to fan snakes? I'm doing something similar currently at another church. A 16"x16" or so custom plate and NEMA box aren't too pricey, and snakes can be Elite Core on up to nice Whirlwind/Rapco/etc.

I was thinking along those same lines, a patch panel of sort.
Unless you truly have a big boy 60 input stage you could use a smaller patch/jumper snake of the number of channels on the stage box and then just patch into the stage inputs as needed on the patch panel, that would also save on wear and tear of your stage box connectors.
