short buzzing sound from laptop

while doing my karaoke show last Saturday twice I had a short but loud buzzing sound that overtook the music for about 1 or 2 seconds . Is it possible the cable from my external hard drive is failing ? or is it something worse ? any help would be appreciated

It seems to me it is most likely the cable you are using to connect the laptop to your output source. Have you tried new a new cable? It could also be the port going bad. Also, sometimes laptops and other things plugged into the circuit the laptop is on can cause weird ground loops and things.

I'd expect ground loops to be present throughout. My bet is the 3.5mm jack connection is loose or failing.

John, I'd recommend using a USB interface for any audio coming out of a laptop. Headphone sockets are a last resort IMO. Something like the Behringer UCA202 will give you 2x phono outputs, and works with every machine I've plugged it into - generic drivers work fine.

Mid/high-end ones often require dedicated drivers (my MOTU M4 does), which is fine if you've got the drivers on your machine, but can be problematic if not.

If a USB DI is not an option, I reccomend Whirlwind pcDI. If you're on a budget and you're okay with mono, the Rapco LTIBLOX is great too.

You'll just have to get dual TS to 3.5mm adapter like the Hosa CMP-159 for use with the whirlwind.
