Coax to AES
« on: January 26, 2022, 03:13:34 PM »

Alrighty,

One of the consoles I am running is a little shy on local I/O; but I do have a spare AES input available, however my trusty Roland Octacapture only has a Coax out.

Other than the connectors being RCA vs XLR style I have to admit I don't the difference, and so far my searches on that end have landed in me in many audiophile websites discussing the finer merits of which "digital" cable has the highest audio quality  ::) ??? :o .

So what is the best way to get from one to another?

Thanks!

The coax outs are spdif, not AES.
You'll need a separate converter, like this?  https://www.sweetwater.com/store/search.php?s=aes+converter

Using an appropriate transformer is recommended. Neutrik, canare and others make them for going between 75 ohm and 110ohm AES.

However, for short interconnects a adaptor lead is likely to work just fine.

SPDIF is essentially a consumer version of AES3 (but at a lower P-P voltage than AES3) and for short distances a passive adaptor/cable will work, Thomann sell said cables so it must be fine.

Specifically, grab this:  https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CDL313--hosa-cdl-313

Not super sexy, but it works. I have one kicking around in my kit. It's a life saver when you need it. And it's easier than making something yourself. :-)

This Rane note contains all the details: https://www.ranecommercial.com/legacy/note149.html

So for a short distance going from S/PDIF to AES/EBU will probably work with just a connector adapter type cable, but you won't have impedance matching. So either a transformer or active converter is preferred.

Going from AES/EBU to S/PDIF requires a properly designed adapter, since the voltage levels of the AES/EBU output are higher then what a S/PDIF input can handle.

The best one is the one I can convince you to spend a ludicrous amount of money on that isn't any better, well better for my bank balance  ;D

I sure hope you sell "audio enhancing crystals" as well.  8)  ;)

Ben’s response makes me wonder what you think the AES input on your console and SPDIF output on your Octocapture are. AES audio on XLR is 2 audio channels, as SPDIF. You will only be able get 2 of the Octocapture’s mic pres into your console.
