GBF: SE V7 vs Neumann KMS105
« on: January 09, 2022, 01:26:13 PM »

I have a girl on a KMS105 right now, but she's a soft singer and the PA/room isn't the most ideal situation, so those that have used them what is your opinion on the 105 vs the V7 in regards to gain before feedback. I've never used the V7 but keep hearing nothing but good about it.

The installer for the new club I started working at a few months ago purchased three V7s.  Me and the other old soundguy were not familiar with them, so we brought in our own 58s for a while.  But, we've added some acoustic panels over the stage and had more time to work on the monitors with the V7s, and now I am very happy with them.  We've had quite a few performers say how much they like the stage sound in the club too.  The club features plenty of Bluegrass, Americana and Blues Rock.

My own personal vocal mic selection will remain Senn e935/e945, but I would not turn up my nose at an SE mic. For the price, I suggest that you pick one up and give it a try.  They have a nice heft to them, and the red foam under the windscreen looks pretty cool too.  Oh, and they will fit in a Shure mic clip.  I don't have any experience with the Neuman.

Yeah I'm thinking that's what is gonna happen.

I am historically a curmudgeonly old soundguy and only use 58's. This is for the youth band though so I'm trying out some of the other mics we have. Somebody that was here before me bought 1 copy of several different mics. Senn 935, Heil PR35, KMS105, and a couple others. It at least keeps it interesting to audition mics in a non critical environment. I guess it's my turn to test drive the V7.

I'd expect the e935 to work well - they've been great for me.

If you're willing to spend the cash, the e965 is an upgrade in terms of sound, and the super-cardioid pattern works well on loud stages.

Audix VX-5 at $249 retail is tough to beat.  Good gain before feedback.

GBF @ test-position, or GBF real-world? A singer/songwriter at a piano, or a vocalist at a stand is one thing. As soon as a mic becomes handheld wildcards get introduced. Experience has demonstrated to me if you cannot rapidly get things in the 90th percentile with a 58, other things are afoot (i.e. the mic ain't the real problem). That said, my experiences with the SE7 capsule on RF have been positive, especially for singers who choke/cup the mic.

Hi Tim,

    I haven't used the SE V7.
My experience with the KMS105 is that it's well behaved and sounds very good.
Am guessing you've already asked the Talent for more signal in the mic.
In addition to SM58s, B58s, E935s, Heil PR35s, EV 767s,
I have one Shure KSM8 and want more.  My experience is excellent GBF, and
I really, really like the sound of this mic.  If I can get away with the size, it's now
my podium mic of choice with talkers/singers on and way off the mic.
    Definitely worth borrowing and trying.

Thanks and good health,  Weogo

That would be the next step I think. I'm really just curious about the V7. Just want to see if the hype is real. It's certainly cheap enough to audition, but the KSM8 is something I would borrow to test drive first.....

105 is nice, but it's quite "open", so it captures a lot of room.
Perfect for people singing and playing acoustic guitar, not something I use on a loud stage unless the talent brings their own.
Never tried the V7.
Own a few KSM8, it's over and underrated IMHO.
I think the whole "lack of proximity" that Shure claims is overrated, but not a big deal.
I also think it's SQ is a bit under-rated, some people doesn't like it, I think it's pretty good.
It also seems to handle loud cymbal wash pretty good. Did a tour with a second lead singer position on the drum riser where the lead singer could walk up and sing when he wanted. I found surprisingly little cymbal wash in the mic and could compress/EQ its quite easily.
(Perfect example of a position where I wouldn't use a KMS105)

I'm a fan of the sE V7 mics (have both wired handhelds and Shure-compatible wireless capsules) but wouldn't dare compare it to a mic costing 4 or 5 times as much.

It's less about comparing apples to oranges and more about having a good sounding mic for female vox that also has good GBF performance.

I just happened to have a KMS105 and that's been the best choice for her so far. If the V7 can give me more GBF and still sound good doing it I'm all in.

The guy that had my job before me (church job) bought the Neumann and a Senn 935 and some Heil stuff. The V7 gives me one more mic to try.

It can definitely do that. Off axis rejection of the V7 is excellent - BUT that may create issues for vocalists who can't stay on mic.

My other favorite dynamic hyper cardioid vocal mic is the Telefunken M80/M81 (at about 2.5x the cost of a V7).

I have SE V7 capsules on all our "you get what we give you" rigs which is a 97% of our business.  I agree I can't remember the last time I had a feedback issue but I don't work on postage stamp stages where drumsticks if a grip is lost require anal spelunking for removal from the lead singer (not in our contract).

Seriously, big stages, well tuned systems can get insanely loud even with a set of powered 12's.  The inverse square law works on mics too.

Churches have a whole different set of feedback problems mostly from users that don't know how to use a mic.

With all of that said the V7 is a sweet mic.  I don't know why, I can't explain it, it's a sum greater than the whole thing.  It is easy to work with.  It doesn't break the laws of physics though.

Tim Weaver , I didn't see it was you!  You have a big stage and a well tuned system.  You want me to send you a couple of capsules to play with.  If you like them you can pay for them if not just send them back.

Lol. No worries. I bought one and used it yesterday on her. It worked well I thought! I want to get a couple more shows in before making a final assesment, but so far I like it.

The V7 seems to have a mouch more forward upper midrange. It's not harsh though. 2k-3k region. It works great on vocals since that is right in the middle of the "intelligibilty range". I could see this being super useful for people that don't know how to handle microphones. The V7 from my two songs I heard it on it doesn't change a lot with distance. She doesn't ever eat the mic though so I don't know how it responds to proximity effect. From a couple inches to a foot or so away it sounded remarkably the same.

Feedback resistance was quite a bit better than the KMS105. Directionality as well. So far I like the V7. No downsides that I've seen yet. Will have to use it some more to form a better opinion.

Love to hear a bit more about this mic after you have had a bit more time with it ... I have just about everything else, KSM8, KSM9, KSM105, 58, B58, B56, B57, AE6100, AE5400. I have never tried the V7; a lot of people seem to like it and I though it may be worth getting a few.

My observations as well. Posted this blurb a couple of years ago:

https://twitter.com/i/web/status/968248756847202304

https://hi-in.facebook.com/sEElectronics/photos/a.130023450431538/1262145717219300/

Received the latest copy of MIX Magazine yesterday and noted that the V7 cartridge was chosen for Phil Collins' mic on the latest Genesis tour. Obviously, price was no object there.

Since there seem to be at least 6 versions of the V7 I wonder which model is most popular.  Is there really much difference?

Another +1 for the V7 capsules - I have a bunch of them for my Shure sticks and everyone who uses them loves them.

If you're looking to spend a little more $$, one of the best GBF/proximity/sounding capsules I've worked with is the DPA 2028. I really rejects unwanted noise and manages proximity quite well. Not sure if it's in your budget, but it's worth a look.

AFAIK, the V7 model differences are purely cosmetic.
