It's jut crazy how cheap some of the lights have gotten. OR, it's crazy how expensive they used to be. Or a combination of the two.
That, and more so what you get for your money. When buying from pro names like Clay Paky, Martin, ETC, and Robe you're not only paying for the unit, but the R&D that went into it, the support to back it up, the spare parts to keep it running, and the product consistency to meet the needs of users from all over the world.
I'll be the first to admit that I've shipped back plenty of pro-grade fixtures for warranty issues, but I'm still happy to pay the premium price to know there will be someone to answer my support call who knows what they're talking about. Just today I needed to order a replacement part for a specific unit in personal inventory. One quick phone call and the part is on its way, will be delivered/installed on Thursday, and will be on a show this Saturday. Try that with any Direct from China light...
Programming Direct from China fixtures can be a whole other can of worms...
I'm in no way trying to morph this into another Name Brand vs. China thread - just emphasizing that the premium price tag on pro-level units buys you a lot more than just the fixture.
