New Article: My First Compressor

Hi Gang,
More cryptic tales from the crypt:https://www.prosoundweb.com/my-first-compressor-getting-aquainted-with-a-then-new-tool-in-the-mix-kit/
Might be a useful addition as a teaching aid for those that teach.
Cheers!

Love it. I spent many hours on a rig with a Yamaha PM430, a PM180, and an Ashly SC50 (early: toggle switch & 'scope logo).

I did read that one and it's a great story. Just not a great gig.

So was the band in question Manteca?

Manteca would have been my guess too.

I also love hearing the "war stories", having started out in roughly that same era.  A buddy of mine used the Ashly SC-50 as a "one-comp-for-everything" processing on his rig when he worked with a touring club band in the very early '80s.  It did seem to glue things together a bit better than without.  I tried to do the same thing with my much smaller, weekend warrior PA, but with a similar Symetrix CL-100.  I think I may have evolved to compressing a group with it, once I got a console that could do that, before spinning it off to some install, and discovering dbx 166s.

Good times!

That's a great read Ike, as your stuff always is but you left us (as I assume you are) puzzled.  You never found out the reason for such an egregious snub.

I occasionally have to work with people who don't like me or think I am not qualified to setup a kazoo but never has anyone deliberately sabotaged whatever was supposed to be happening on stage.  Leaving things unresolved bothers me, I would have flat out asked.  Now nobody will know!

{...} You never found out the reason for such an egregious snub. {...}

I feel like I've worked with people (and not just in our industry) for whom Ike merely sticking to his guns on his group's requirements would have been more than reason enough ("clearly, the only reason you aren't bending to my will is because you're an unreasonable asshole, and I'm going to make sure everyone around me knows it"). $5 says this is also why there was a change in PA vendor. :P
