RF with nearby ipads
« on: November 22, 2021, 12:48:14 AM »

I mix while I perform in my band.  Lately, I've been getting a bit more RF interference. My setup is far from ideal, but there may be ways to improve it.

I use a Line 6 digital wireless system for my guitar.
I have a Sennheiser EW300 G3 IEM setup.
I have 2 ipads in front of me. One for mixing, one for music.  They are quite close to me most of the time.
The beltpacks are around a foot apart.

Obviously, the interference gets higher when I lean over near the ipads.

Any tips on reducing interference? I suspect most of it comes from the IEM systems, as it's not heard through FOH.

Thanks

Andrew

Can you be more specific?
Is the interference affecting the guitar, the IEM or the connection to the console from the iPad?
What is the symptom of this interference?

I know the Line 6 wireless stuff operates in the 2.4ghz band in the same area as wifi, that could be an issue. Are you sure you don't hear the interference in the mains.

Maybe try using only 5g as the wifi connection between you mixer and iPad.
Turn off the 2.4 broadcast on your router or access point.

Thanks. I can here the interference through the IEM. It doesn’t come through FOH, so I think it is interference impacting the IEM system. I am around 6ft away from the mixer. The connection (wifi) to the mixer works fine.

I believe the wifi is running 2.4. I’ll see if it also runs 5g. The sound is definitely coming through the IEM only.

Your earbud cable is acting as an antenna picking up the RF from the Ipad. it's worse as you get closer (lean over). Keep the Ipad away from any audio cables, especially with unbalanced small signals.
