"The Station" fire documentary
« on: October 22, 2021, 12:23:40 PM »

Tomorrow night on CBS 48 Hours they have a special about this deadly fire.  Since there was a plea deal arranged there was never a trial.  The club owners at the time are among those interviewed.  The episode will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ ( possibly not until Sunday).

That was a very sad situation.  Those patrons should have been able to exit that building.  Fire exits are there for a reason.  So there's a way out when idiots come in and set the place ablaze.

I saw a presentation by John Barylick, one of the lawyers for the victims and their families.

He also wrote this book.

Tragic, you would hope that we would learn some lessons, but I still see dumb sh*t happening in too many places.

I encourage everyone in this industry to check out the Event Safety Alliance and the work they are doing to make our industry safer for everybody.

This got me surfing and I came across the account of the deadliest nightclub fire in US history in 1942 in Boston....
Wow - 492 deaths - 8 survivors are still alive and the anniversary of the tragic event ironically is next month.

December 4, 1971  -almost 50 years ago is when Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention were playing the Casino in Montreux Switzerland. Fortunately, nobody died and most of the injuries were minor.  Immortalized by Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water".

RIP to all those terrified poor souls.

Sobering to think all the shithole clubs I've worked in with my PA & lights that had steel doors chained shut to save on security costs.  I've seen it many many times - back then it was just accepted by myself and crew.  Not anymore.

Today, I see crap like that and it's time to drop the lift gate and load out, no questions asked, no arguments, no compromise - just gone.....cya.

I look for schitt like that when surveying the site now.

Thanks for the heads-up.
How many clubs have we all been in over the years, punters or working, that displayed a similar lack of foresight?
Add over-capacity and drinking, what could possibly go wrong?

To think that even today, "The Brothers" still take no responsibility for what happened.
Great White Pyro.
Foam company sent the wrong foam.
Fire inspector didn't test the foam. 3 inspections apparently.
By admission they were told to fix the stage side fire door - they didn't, but since some band members made it out, it must be OK.
Wow.
It wasn't mentioned, but didn't JBL get named in the suit because their PA was in use, and caught fire?
What DIDN'T catch fire that night?

I am horrified at the loss, but not shocked at the causes.
Promoters and owners racing to the bottom of the cost structure. It is a common issue, even today.

Everyone even remotely involved got sued. Even a local beer distributer was sued.

Documents from one of the civil suits: https://lawprofessors.typepad.com/tortsprof/files/amendedcomplaint.pdf

Quote
40.  Upon information and belief, Defendant, Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc.  and Defendant, McLaughlin and Moran, Inc.,  as part of their sponsorship of the Great White concert on February 20,  2003, arranged for a batch of Budweiser beer that was brewed in Defendant, Anheuser-Busch Companies Inca's  New Hampshire brewery to be delivered to The Station by  Defendant, McLaughlin & Moran,  Inc.,  for sale that evening, so that fans at The Station could have the "freshest beer" that they were ever likely to have.  Upon information and belief this fact was promoted repeatedly to induce patrons to attend the Great White concert as well as providing promotional tickets to the event contributing to overcrowding to the detriment of the Plaintiffs and interfere with their ability to exit the premises with safety, further creating a joint enterprise.

I didn't see JBL mentioned in this complaint, but they may have been one of the 100 'john does' charged.

Standard Operating Procedure for Civil Lawsuits in the U.S.. After a building under construction in New Jersey collapsed, even the Food Truck operator was initially on the list of defendants. They'll shake every tree to see what falls out.

A lawyer explained this:  it's not the job of plaintiff's counsel to determine the extent of participation (if any) in a loss, but to identify all parties that stood to benefit from the circumstances leading up to the loss and to let the court/jury determine who should be held liable and to what degree.
