Microphone disposable covers
« on: October 21, 2021, 06:21:30 PM »

Found these:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MLCXBPV?ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details&th=1

A sloppy wet grill has always bothered me, even when I'm the only one using the mic.  Way worse when it's shared :(

These disposable mic socks really help to keep spittle off the grill ball.  For intelligibility, I need to be as close as possible without touching the grill, and this gives a warning that I'm too close.  Cheap and disposable.  No, they will not surmount "the look" hurdle.

<edit>  Renamed title...  a rather "dry" name, but I guess that's the point.

That was a good idea even before the current pandemic.  A genuine SM58 only costs $10/year, $5/year if you don't abuse it.

Likewise, different brand.

These disposable mic socks really help to keep spittle off the grill ball.

The NC Folk Festival utilized something similar this year, though those were in "disposable mask blue".

I imagine some singers can render them ineffective but, for the most part (if only for the placebo effect), they worked well and didn't interfere sonically. Perhaps thinking of them as "hairnets" is more palatable than the condom reference?

Well... it's better than latex...

We wipe down mics with non-chlorine sanitizer (although the name Chlorox is on the package). 30 second wet time is all that is needed.  If not in direct sunlight or wind, 30 seconds is about when it starts to evaporate...

Note that virii and other unpleasant things do not leap from the microphone grille and onto unsuspecting singers or presenters.  Microphone users whose technique involves licking or ingesting the microphone in any way should be held for intervention 8)

That said, nobody wants to use an icky, gross mic.  Keep 'em clean!  Note that the SM-58 grille is "top rack dishwasher safe" IMHO.

Foam windscreens can be washed in warm, soapy water, rinsed, and squeeze-dried in a clean towel.  You can add quaternary ammonium sanitizer to your rinse water if you like.

Plus, if you buy an SM58, you don't need to bring a hammer since it can double as one in a pinch. :)
