Microphone for outdoor install

(1/2) > >>

William Fournier:
I have someone asking about installing a microphone outside their house to bring sounds of nature (birds and wind were mentioned) into the home. Most of the microphones I'm seeing intended for outdoor use are more utilitarian meant for something like a ticket stand, CCTV or crowd noise compensation.

Anyone know of something purpose built for this or have ideas for an enclosure to make a microphone last longer outside?

Search only turned up this thread from 2007 which described a similar situation but I didn't anything conclusive there.

The Crown mic mentioned in that old thread is now AKG branded:

Frequency response looks tailored for speech so it may not be ideal for wildlife. I am not aware of much else in the pro audio industry - may be best to look at security industry products.

Thanks, funny enough I happened to see the local Shure rep today and he mentioned the DL4 as an option.

Tim Weaver:
While not specifically listed as an outdoor mic, the EV 635A is pretty darn rugged.

We used them at the A&M football stadium. Installed sometime in the 70's to bring crowd noise into the box seats. When I worked there in the 2000's one of them sounded like it was bad, so we bought another, climbed up to it and found that it had been covered by a Dirt Dauber nest. We took it down and put the new one up. I took the old one home and cleaned it up. It still works to this day.
